When Should I Pay My Credit Card Bill?

The most important part of responsibly using a credit card is making on-time payments. So figuring out when to pay your credit card bill should be a no-brainer, right?

If you have a balance on a credit card you have to make a payment. The credit card company will likely issue you a payment date every billing statement period and you will have to make a minimum payment by that time. But there are some best practices to always keep in mind when paying your credit card bill!

You May Have Flexibility

Some credit card companies allow a bit of flexibility on when your payments are due. They will allow you to choose your payment date window so it better lines up with your other bills. This is something that is not available across the board so investigate your card options and see if it is something you can use. If you have this option and it will help you stay on top of your bills then use it! Give your credit card company a call and see if you can do this. Many will allow this but won’t necessarily advertise it.

Pay Before The Due Date

Always keep processing times in mind when making payments. If you mail in a check will it take longer to process? If you make a payment online over the weekend will it take a few more days to post? Be mindful of these factors so you don’t accidentally miss your payment date. Each credit card company has different processing times so you can’t base your previous experience with other cards with your current ones.

You should always aim to pay before your due-date and not wait until the last minute and risk a late payment. Aim for a full week ahead of the due date.

Pay Your Balance In Full

If you can, pay your balance in full every month. This is the only way you can truly avoid racking up interest charges. If you can’t manage that then aim to pay off as much as you can every month.
